Talley Bend: A Modest Proposal

The U.S. Board on Geographic Names is responsible for standardizing the names of geographic features within the 50 states and other areas under the sovereignty of the United States.

This application is to name a bend on the Buffalo River one mile north of Linden as Talley Bend.  The area encloses approximately 142 acres.  In 1820, John Talley and his family were the first to claim land there.  The graves of  him, his wife, and two others remain in the area (see Mile 40 on the Topo map).  This request is unique because  John Talley was one of 14 known veterans of the Revolutionary War who settled in Perry County (see Biography).  Naming the bend with his surname honors the pioneer spirit that opened Perry County for future settlement from other Revolutionary War veterans and settlers seeking a new homestead in the county.   The proposal is particularly significant in that July 4, 2026, commemorates the 250th Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

See the attached document for a Genealogical Proof Standard account of this homestead.
